Cans For Comments

December 6th, 2010

Last year I saw a few bloggers do this in December and got inspired to do it myself. It gave good results and I ended up donating a lot of canned foods to Feed Nova Scotia. Therefore I’m doing it again.

It’s really easy. All you need to do is comment on any post on my blog from now until December 20th. That gives a full 2 weeks to build up comments. For every comment received I will donate 1 can of food to Feed Nova Scotia. It’s that simple.

So get commenting people, lets feed some Nova Scotians!! :)

Traveling: Toronto

December 5th, 2010

This summer I had the opportunity to travel. Now if you know anything about me, you’d know that I absolutely adore traveling. I love to see new places, meet new people and experience new cultures. I especially love big cities. Like Toronto!

My “excuse” to go to Toronto was to second shoot a wedding with my fabulous friend and photographer, Ryan Visima. I was away for 4 days in total; 3 in Toronto and 1 in Waterloo. The first few days there Ryan showed me around the city a bit. I’ve been to Toronto before but I was either by myself and had no one to show me around or I was with school and we had to stick to the “schedule”. While in Toronto we went to the Canada Day Parade, walked through  Stan Wadlow Park and Taylor Creek Park, went to dinner with friends, tried to go see the CN Tower but it was too busy, did lots of shopping and went to Church Street for Gay Pride.

I have to say my two favorite parts about the trip besides the wedding were definitely walking around Toronto and seeing Gay Pride. Toronto has so many different cultures compared to Halifax and it really did fascinate me. Halifax doesn’t have neighbourhoods like China Town and Little Italy. One of my favorite places to walk through was Kensington Market. It is so full of color, culture and lots of vintagey type stores. I was in heaven to say the least. Gay pride was fabulous as well. Again, so full of culture. I was really amazed and even envious of a lot of the people there. They are so comfortable in their own skin. Dress, act, say what they want and not care what others think. I strive to be that but it doesn’t happen all the time. Here are some photos from our adventures.

Taken on my way to Toronto. I love air plane photos!

At the CN Tower.

And yes, I did lay on the ground to get this photo. Below is evidence courtesy of Ryan.

This amazed me. There are tons and tons of condos in Toronto. This section of the high way is called condo city. You don’t see this kind of development in Halifax, that’s for sure. Kind of reminds me of a futuristic style movie.

Toronto has some seriously fun stuff. The artwork is so crazy and beautiful. The shops are creative. I would love to see more stuff like this in Halifax. These photos were taken in the distillery district.

Awwww, market puppies :)

The colorful Kensington Market.

Excuses : Inspiration

December 3rd, 2010

I will be the first to admit that excuses are lame. I hate getting them and I hate giving them. That being said I do have one for last week. I had originally planned to have a post up every day until sometime in the middle of December but last week I was sick for a couple of days and the plan fell off the band wagon. This week, I don’t have an excuse. Blame it on being uninspired? Blame it on being lazy? Whatever the case, I can’t change the past right?

Instead the best thing to do is to move forward. Today I stumbled upon Etsy‘s youtube channel and ended up spending more time on there than I should have. It reminded me of the Inspiration posts that I used to put up on my old blog. Pretty much once a week I would post about something that had inspired me that week. I will admit that it might have become a little tedious and I honestly don’t know if my readers enjoyed the posts. That being said, I think I’m going to do them again. Just not on such a large extent. I, Christine Newhook, promise to you, my Reader, that I will only posts worthy inspirations here. Never on a committed schedule. Only when I am actually feeling inspired.

Now on to the inspiration!!

I wanted to show you all this one video of a seller on Etsy. Her name is Yokoo. This is the link to her Etsy store.

I love her outlook on life. How she words things. Her presence in the film. I think it was done so beautifully. She makes knitted scarves and other accessories. She has made 1583 items. Yes. She has knitted 1583 items! How insane is that?? What have you consciously done 1583 times? The only thing I can think of is take a photo and maybe pee. :P

Check out her store and if you’re interested in other inspiration videos/people check out Etsy’s Youtube Channel. There is lot of inspiration there.

ps- Photos to come in my next post :)

Tidy Up To Stay Inspired

November 23rd, 2010

Over the past two years I have been blogging I have also been collecting a list of bloggers to follow. I have found this extremely helpful and entertaining in the past. Reading about other people’s struggles through owning their own business comforted me when I was going through a hard time. Celebrating people’s successes with them inspired me to strive for more successes myself.

Then I started finding blogs that weren’t about photography. I stumbled upon finance blogs, fitness blogs, fashion blogs, and so on. At one point my Google Reader list was at about 90 blogs. Then I started to fall behind in reading them. When it got to over 200 unread posts I just stopped altogether.

Now that I have launched my new blog I have felt inspired again to join the blogging community. I just swept through my Google Reader list and cleaned it out. Not that I don’t enjoy keeping up to date with everyone on it, but realistically I would have to read all day every day to do so. Therefore I have cut my list from 80 down to 37! It feels nice to cut this list down, surround myself in the greatness of these bloggers and to have my Google Reader say 0 new posts! Yay!! :D

Just because I know you all are interested in some of the people I follow, here are just a few.

Halifax Portraits : Layla

November 22nd, 2010

In June I had the opportunity to test out a lens I was interested in on one of my favorite people to photography, Layla. I originally took some new born portraits of her October 2009. She was one of the smallest babies I had ever seen. She was so well behaved and cute. This time she was exactly the same. I had a lot of fun photographing her with Lindsay and Nathaniel. They are such beautiful, kind people and I can see where Layla got her lovely demeanor.

Without further ado, here is Layla!

Duckie had to make an appearance :)

One of my favorites from our session.

What a beautiful family!!

Another fav. It seems kids love to put their hands in their mouths. Hahaha.

What beautiful eyes!

Public Gardens Portraits : Jessica

November 21st, 2010

High school was an interesting period in my life. I never really fit in both in junior high and in high school. Hopping around from social circle to social circle depending on my mood. I grew a lot as a person in high school but I don’t think I would ever want to repeat it if somehow I had the opportunity to.

For me, prom was kind of a disappointing event but the one part I did really enjoy was the getting ready part. Getting my hair done, full face of makeup, putting on an expensive dress, etc. I’m pretty sure at least 80% of women really enjoy that part. And for good reason, they always look fabulous after it all.

Jessica was no exception. She was absolutely radiant on her prom day. I’m pretty sure she smiled for our entire photo session :) As you can see in the below photos she was just glowing that day.

Jessica has such a beautiful smile. She looked absolutely stunning that day.

Jessica and her sister Virginia. Jessica found my work through her sister. I photographed Virginia last winter with her boyfriend Allyn.

I think this is my favorite from the whole session. They make such a cute couple :)

Downtown Halifax Portraits : Ellen

November 19th, 2010

(This was originally posted June 18th, 2010 on my Blogspot blog.)

Ellen approached me a few months ago to get some portraits done. After sending some messages back and forth I knew that she was a great person (she still is too :P ). I started to get excited for the session and before I knew it we were on location. Let me just say that Ellen is a complete natural in front of the camera. The photo below is one of the very first photos I took of her. Normally it takes people time to loosen up in front of the camera. Not Ellen.

This session was all about casual photos. No theme. No style. Just some fun smiles. Below are the results and I couldn’t be more happy about them! I really hope to work with Ellen again in the future.

Thank you so much for the fabulous session Ellen. If you’re up for another one this summer please message me!!

New Blog

November 19th, 2010

I am super duper excited to finally launch my new blog! It has been a long time in the making… kind of. I finally found a wonderful program that I love (WordPress) and had a friend help me set it up. It has taken me some time to get it looking the way I want but I can officially say that I like how it looks for now and I hope you do to!

In celebration of the new blog I have some exciting things coming up for all of my readers. First off, I have a lot of catching up to do. I have actually been writing blog posts for the past week so that I can put them up one after another for all of you lovelys. This has pretty much been my summer in a nut shell. There are some weddings, some portrait sessions, some random photo adventures and just some general updates. Secondly, I have decided to run a blog launch contest. So please keep coming back for more updates as to the details of the contest.

Thank you to all of my loyal readers from my blogspot account and I hope you all enjoy the new blog :)
